Yes, I know you can hook up a PC to the TV, but it isn't the same. I'm sure it'll likely come on Steam, but the main reason I like Duels and don't play MTGO is due to the living room experience of couch play and party chat. The fact this seems like an X1 exclusive, when I'll be getting a PS4, is also a disappointment. On the other hand, I dislike a lot about the modern gaming era, especially F2P. The gulf was only getting wider each year.
They needed to do this to compete with Hearthstone and bring the series into the modern gaming era. Origins is a standalone set before they move into the new 2 x 2 model, so I expect we'll get a complimentary F2P version with each Paper release, with MD being a platform for content delivery rather than a standalone title. The name change to Magic Duels, and suffix of Origins states to me this will be the first entry in the quarterly model they talked about in the leaked investor document.
